* Byzanfest appreciates early submissions in order to resolve any technical or administrative issues.

ELIGIBILITY

All 7 points MUST be satisfied
 

Point 1

Each entry must be submitted by either the:

  • director; or

  • producer

 

Note: if none of the above own the film’s copyright, they MUST obtain written permission from the copyright holder.


This person will be known as the ‘Contact Person’ on the Entry Form and the person responsible to fulfil all submission requirements under Byzanfest’s Terms and Conditions.

The Contact Person is solely responsible for ensuring the film complies with all domestic and international copyright laws. This is not Byzanfest’s responsibility.
 

Point 2

The Contact Person MUST be an Eastern Orthodox Christian.

Point 3

Byzanfest is looking for films that express Orthodox Christian themes, beliefs, culture and values.

​

However, an entry’s storyline does not necessarily have to be directly ‘religious’ or spiritual. Although the film may not appear to have ‘Orthodox’ subject matter, it can still be deemed an Orthodox film because it was created by an Orthodox Christian filmmaker who maintained an Orthodox phronema (‘mindset’) during the creative process, remaining faithful to their Christian sense of dignity, morality and self-respect.

 

Point 4

Byzanfest is a global event open to all citizens, world-wide. Byzanfest is open to professional, amateurs and students.

 

There is no age limit.
 
Point 5

The Contact Person can submit up to 3 films for selection. Each film will require payment of a separate entry fee (ie. 3 submissions = $45 USD).

 

Point 6
If film’s language is not English, it MUST contain English subtitles.

Point 7
There is NO requirement this needs to be the film’s première screening. It can previously been broadcast or screened at other festivals.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Film must have been made between 2015 - 2020.
 

Once entry form, film, 3 film-stills, director’s profile photo & entry fee have been received, each submission will undergo a preliminary round of judging. A short-list will be drafted and another screening will determine the final program. If successful, the Contact Person will be notified and the film will be uploaded to TRANSFIGURE MEDIA’s YouTube Channel.

To be nominated for Best Screenplay the screenwriter must be an Orthodox Christian.
 

To be nominated for Best Youth Film the Contact Person must be between the ages of 10-25 years old.

If an entry contains material that is deemed discriminatory or offensive to any group of persons and/or generally distasteful, it will not be screened. Discretion will be used during the judging and selection processes.

FILM FORMAT

The film will be uploaded to YouTube so it must be in a supported format.

 

Accepted formats include:

  • .MOV

  • .MPEG4

  • .WMV

  • .AVI

 

The video codec must be:

            H.264

​

Preferred video resolution:

            720p: 1280 x 720 or higher

 

Byzanfest prefers films in 16:9 aspect ratio.

​

If the film was shot in 3:4 or a different ratio it may be broadcasted on YouTube with pillarbox or letterbox bars. To avoid this please format film to 16:9 aspect ratio.

 

 

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Option 1:

You must provide the following in order to qualify for selection:

- entry form

- film

- 3 screen shots from film

- profile photo of director

- paid entry fee

Option 2:

This option is if you wish to submit via post.

 

You must provide the following in order to qualify for selection:

  • entry form

  • film: 1 x playable DVD + 1 x accepted format DVD

  • 3 scene shots & Director’s profile: 1 x CD or USB (JPEG)

Please ensure the film can be easily copied from disc and uploaded.

PERMISSION FOR SCREENING
By completing and signing Entry Form, the Contact Person agrees to the Festival’s Terms & Conditions, granting the Byzanfest permission to broadcast their film(s).


The Contact Person also grants Byzanfest permission to use film stills submitted for publicity purposes. Images from the film(s) and additional photographs may be reproduced and/or broadcast on the Festival’s website, associated websites and/or media outlets.

If selected for screening and nominated for an award, the Contact Person must be prepared to submit further detailed information about their film and crew. The Contact Person must also be prepared to supply costumes, props and/or actors (if any) for a media photo shoot or provide photographs.

At this stage, each category will be awarded a certificate. Additional prizes may be awarded depending on sponsorship level reached.

TIME LIMITS
Byzanfest has two standards for time length of film. Times listed below include opening title and closing credit.


Dramas, comedies, thrillers, web series
Preferred: 3 – 10 min
Maximum: 30 min
 

Documentary / Educational

Maximum: 30 min


Animation
Preferred: 2 – 10 min
Maximum: 20 min

Experimental, music clips
Preferred: 2 – 5 min

Maximum: 10 min
 

 

SCREENING

Films selected for broadcasting will be uploaded to TRANSFIGURE MEDIA’s YouTube Channel.
